Health is central to well-being, and as evidenced by its conclusion in the UN Sustainable Development Goals “ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages” is one of the most pressing challenges facing societies today. In the US – which currently ranks only 27th in life expectancy among the 35 member countries of the OECD – it has become increasingly clear that solutions to health problems must encompass more than reforms to health care systems. Experts, such as Dr. Anthony Iton, our 2015 keynote speaker, tell us that the social determinants of health – including geography, environmental factors, lifestyle behaviours, and racism and other forms of exclusion – carry more weight than genetics and access to medical care when it comes to health. As such, community actors and practitioners are recognizing the importance of pursuing a broader vision of health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Given these complexities, how can communities make better use of data to step up to the challenge of improving health and well-being for all? This panel aims to shed some light on the issues by presenting the experiences of a range of projects that are striving to build healthier communities through the innovative use of data and evidence.
